Research and research training

The Growing Esteem strategy of the University of Melbourne is conceptualised around a triple helix metaphor with strands of research and research training, learning and teaching and knowledge transfer.

The first strand – research and research training – is core to the mission of the University, linking Melbourne to the great centres of scholarship around the world. The research and research training strand allows us both to achieve what we call our research outcomes and output and also to train research higher degree students including PhD or Doctoral research and Masters by research.

In 2006, the Growing Esteem strategic plan articulated the University’s desire to:

1.    Move towards research of world-significance by:

2.    Strengthen cross-disciplinary and collaborative research by:

3.    Build future research capacity by:

The 2007 and 2008 University Plans as well as other Growing Esteem publications have built upon these goals further.

The research portfolio is under the responsibility of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) with the support of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research). The Pro Vice-Chancellor (Graduate Research) has portfolio responsibility for research training. More information about implementation of the strategy is available on the research webpage and from the Melbourne School of Graduate Research.

The Melbourne Research Office works closely with the faculties, other parts of the Administration and Melbourne Ventures to ensure effective and efficient research management and administration.
