Email to alumni

On Thursday 18 June, the Vice-Chancellor Professor Glyn Davis sent the following email to Alumni:

Dear alumni

A little over three years has passed since the University of Melbourne adopted the Growing Esteem strategy, which sets a course for the University to contribute to the national and international community.  It has required much hard work and professionalism from our staff, and the guidance and support of our broader community of friends and alumni to pursue this vision.  As a result, the highly-regarded Melbourne Model is now in its second year, our research performance has maintained a very high standard and we have vastly improved our coordination of previously under-acknowledged activities now grouped under the heading knowledge transfer.

These three strands of core activities - research, learning and teaching, and knowledge transfer - need to be highly focussed and mutually reinforcing.  While the strategy seems sound in practice, there are no doubt opportunities for further improvement, in light of lessons from implementation and changes in the world around campus.

To review carefully progress to date and ideas for the future, the University has produced a new discussion document titled Refining our Strategy.  Recognising the broad expertise residing in our large and accomplished cohort of graduates, I am keen to encourage the participation of alumni in this important process of consultation.  I hope you can find a few moments to consider the details of our discussion document, and would be grateful for any thoughts on next steps.

An electronic copy of Refining our Strategy has been made available on the Growing Esteem website at http://growingesteem.unimelb.edu.au/ for you to access, along with further details regarding the consultation process.  Hard copies are available from the Office of the Vice-Chancellor as required.

All responses are sought by Friday, 31 July 2009 and can be emailed to growing-esteem@unimelb.edu.au.  I do look forward to hearing your thoughts and recommendations.

Yours,

Glyn Davis

Vice-Chancellor
